Dr. Xu received his PhD and Master degrees from Tsinghua University in Electrical Engineering in 2001. Then he joined Ryerson University as post-doctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Electric Drivers and Application Research (LEDAR) of Ryerson University. Since 2003 he became the faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the same university, where he is the Professor. Dr. Xu has collaborated with global companies in developing the technology for medium voltage drives, aerospace power converters, switch mode power supplies, and energy storage systems. He has published over 100 papers and held nine US patents. Dr. Xu’s research interests include the high power density power converters, advanced digital control, renewable energy systems, energy storage and smart grid.

Abstract

With applications of large scale energy storage system in transportation and utility industry, power converters play more and more important roles in the system to bridge the connections of different system. In most applications, power density and efficiency are the two critical requirements to reduce the footprint size of overall system. In order to address the industry needs, innovative topologies including high power single  stage AC/DC converters are developed for high power EV charging. These topology features higher efficiency and higher power density but require tremendous efforts for complex modulation and control. In this presentations, matrix converter based quasi-resonant single-stage converters are discussed. Prototypes and experimental results show that the developed topologies are very suitable for next generation high power EV charger with SiC devices. The combinational techniques of soft switching and single-stage in the converter design can significantly reduce the converter size and increase the efficiency.
